There are many different possible routes to becoming a DJ, and what works for some may not be the best way for others. Patience, hard work, and an element of luck can all be deciding factors in success! Many DJs get started by buying some equipment (often a fairly basic controller and software), teaching themselves the basics (maybe picking up some tips from friends who may already DJ), and then perhaps start performing at house parties/family events to gain more experience. They then progress to playing paid gigs and effectively learn on the job. This can work well for some, but it can often mean people develop bad habits or have severe gaps in their knowledge, as they have not been guided by someone with experience and they’ve had to work things out the hard way.
