Do you know the amount of players who spend hour upon hour shooting the basketball incorrectly?
TOO MANY TO COUNT!!!
Listen, we are not talking about proper form. We are talking about proper PREPARATION!
We are talking about creating the proper ENVIRONMENT!
The real reasons players don’t make shots in a game?
They train at a speed that does not simulate game speed!
Players must cut multiple times before shooting. A player needs to cut like someone is chasing him!
The body must feel this sense of urgency in training so games have the same exact feel.
More than likely, in a game, a player has just spent 15-30 seconds defending the ball, securing the rebound and sprinting the floor to the offensive end.
From there, a player might cut multiple times and set a few screens prior to that jump shot opportunity.
If you’ve just spent the entire summer knocking down jump shots at 75% preparation speed, without breathing heavy or cutting hard, you are doing yourself a disservice.
Worse than that, you are simply wasting your time!
Another real issue....
That “perfect” pass that you are receiving in training is probably not going to happen in a game.
Players must be comfortable catching “bad” passes and still be able to properly shoot without the pass causing problems with their mechanics!

In addition, stationary “Catch and Shoot” Jump Shots are only one facet of a real shooter’s arsenal. The great ones are working on EVERYTHING! Real Shooters are training curls, fades, pick and roll, elevators, staggers, transition jumpers, off-the dribble and more!
Lastly, your shooting environment must be filled with pressure situations and constant competition. Contesting shots is realistic. So is shooting while someone is trying to get under skin. It is amazing what pressure will do to a young player. Train accordingly.
Being able to knock down shots in practice is cool. Being able to knock down wide open jump shots in a game is rewarding. If you want to be a real “shooter”, then being able to do it all is what matters!
The last thing you want to be is the kid with a pretty jump shot sitting on the bench because you can’t even get off a shot in the game.
